Rose Fertiliser for NZ Gardens

Hello, and welcome to my world of roses! There's a reason they're called the "Queen of the Garden." Their beauty is timeless, and their fragrance is unmatched. Like a true queen, a rose needs proper care to look its best. I’ve found that a well-fed rose is a happy rose, and it’s much more resilient against pests and diseases.

The Key to a Healthy Rose

Roses are known for being heavy feeders, so a regular feeding schedule is essential for abundant flowering. A healthy rose will have vibrant foliage, strong stems, and a continuous flush of blooms throughout the season. They prefer a sunny spot with well-drained soil, and it's important to water them deeply at the base, not over the foliage, to prevent fungal diseases like black spot and rust.

From my years of experience, I’ve learned that a good feed is a major part of your rose's defence system. A well-nourished plant is better equipped to fight off problems.

When to Feed Your Roses in NZ

For established roses, I recommend feeding them at the start of the season in late winter or early spring. This gives them the boost they need for their first flush of growth. I also suggest another application in late summer to encourage a beautiful flush of autumn blooms.

While there are many granular fertilisers on the market, I have found that a liquid fertiliser like LiquidGold™ Dual-Mix Super Feed is a fantastic way to give your roses a quick, visible boost during the peak flowering season. Its nutrients are in a soluble form, so they are immediately available to the plant.

Liquid Fertiliser Nourishment - A Schedule for NZ Roses

My recommendation is to use LiquidGold™ Dual-Mix Super Feed to supplement your regular feeding schedule. Its complete formula contains an aqueous solution of Potassium and Phosphate to encourage flower buds and lush blooms, and Nitrates for healthy, green foliage. It also has a full range of micro-nutrients, including

Magnesium, Iron, and Manganese, which help maintain a vibrant, bright-looking plant.

How to Use LiquidGold™ Dual-Mix Super Feed on Roses:

  • Mix PART A and PART B from one sachet into 10L of water.
  • Water around the base of the plant, being careful to avoid getting the foliage wet. You can apply it every few weeks during the peak flowering season for fantastic results.

FAQ: How to Care for Roses

What can I do to prevent diseases like black spot and rust?

Fungal diseases are a common problem with roses, but they can be managed with good hygiene and care. Always water the soil at the base of the plant, and avoid getting the leaves wet. Make sure to remove any dead leaves or diseased wood from the garden bed, as they can harbour fungal spores.

Should I prune my roses?

Pruning your roses each year is essential for a great harvest of blooms. It encourages new, healthy growth and improves air circulation, which helps prevent diseases. I recommend pruning in winter when the plant is dormant.
