Fertiliser for New Grass in NZ

Hello, and welcome to the beginning of your new lawn! There's nothing quite like the feeling of a lush, green lawn under your feet. It's the perfect backdrop for a summer barbecue or a game of backyard cricket. Getting a new lawn started takes a bit of work, but with the right preparation and feed, you can grow a lawn you’ll be proud of.

The Right Time for New Grass

I’ve always said that autumn is the best time of the year to sow a new lawn here in New Zealand. The soil is still warm, and weed growth has slowed right down, which gives your new grass a fantastic head start. You can also sow a lawn in spring, but you'll need to be more vigilant about weeds, as they will compete with your new grass.

The key to success is giving your new lawn plenty of nutrients to develop a strong, deep root system. In my experience, a liquid fertiliser is a perfect way to do this.

The LiquidGold™ Advantage for New Lawns

From my years in the nursery business, I have always found that liquid fertilisers are a great way to feed new grass. The nutrients are immediately available to the roots and foliage, which gives the lawn a fast-acting boost.

My recommendation is to use LiquidGold™ Dual-Mix Super Feed as a perfect feed for new grass. Its complete formula contains an aqueous solution of Nitrates and Phosphates to promote rapid lateral growth and a deep root system. It also contains

Iron Chelate, which will help your new lawn develop that rich, dark green colour that everyone loves.

How to Use LiquidGold™ Dual-Mix Super Feed on New Grass:

  • Mix PART A and PART B from one sachet into 10L of water.
  • Apply the solution with a watering can or hose-on sprayer to the lawn.
  • I recommend feeding your new lawn two weeks after sowing and then continuing to feed monthly for the first few months.

FAQ: How to Grow a Great New Lawn

What is the best way to water my new lawn?

Watering is crucial for a new lawn. You may need to water a new lawn 2-3 times a day in dry conditions. The guiding principle is to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged to encourage deep root development. For best results, I recommend using a sprinkler or a hose with a fine spray to ensure an even watering across the entire area.

How soon after applying fertiliser can I mow my new lawn?

I always recommend waiting at least 24 hours after applying fertiliser before you mow your lawn. This gives the grass time to absorb the nutrients and prevents any damage from the mower blades. For best results, I also recommend mowing with the blades set higher and not removing more than a third of the grass blade at any one time.
